Middlebury Police Log: Attempted suicides keep police busy

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police and Middlebury Regional EMS officials responded to several reports of suicidal individuals in town last week.

In one May 13 incident officers attempted to speak with a woman in crisis. She jumped on the railing of the Cross Street Bridge and attempted to jump off the bridge. Sgt. Boe grabbed her and pulled her off the railing to safety. She was taken to Porter Hospital where she voluntarily committed herself.

Vermont State Police Log: Police say driver fled crash and ditched car in gravel pit

ADDISON COUNTY — On May 22 at around 6:41 p.m. Vermont State Police responded to a reported hit-and-run incident on Route 22A in Shoreham.

Police said that a vehicle driven by a Williston man was struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by James A. Turner, 26, of Shoreham. Trooper Brett Flansburg reported that shortly after Turner fled the scene he abandoned his vehicle in a sand pit. A Vergennes police K9 unit tracked Turner to a nearby residence, whereupon police determined that he had been transported by another vehicle to another nearby residence.

Vergennes Police Log: Drunk driving, underage drinking, drug cases keep police busy

VERGENNES — Vergennes police between May 11 and 25 dealt with a variety of incidents, including drunk driving, citizen disputes, underage drinking, car accidents, and drug cases.

In that two-week span, Vergennes police:

•  On May 11 cited Linda Williams, 53, of Vergennes for leaving the scene of a two-car accident on Main Street in which she was one of the two drivers.

Middlebury Police Log: Man cited for possession of stolen property

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Nicholas Farrar, 35, of Middlebury for possession of stolen property, following an investigation on May 21.

Police said the investigation began when the parent of a Middlebury College student said she believed she had found a bicycle for sale on Craigslist that her daughter had previously reported stolen. Police said the young woman’s bike was recovered from a Middle Road North location.

Bristol Police Log: Cops busy with everything from DUIs to suspicious men

BRISTOL — On April 29 officers from the Bristol Police Department assisted Vermont State Police, who had been involved in a very brief pursuit at around 11 p.m. that resulted in the suspect’s vehicle going off the road and through a fence at Lathrop’s Mill. Bristol police called a tow truck, blocked traffic and cut the chain link fence from under the vehicle.

The driver, identified by state police as 48-year-old Donald L. Brown of Bristol, was cited for driving under the influence, second offense, by state police.

Vergennes Police Log: Crime "blooming" in the Little City

VERGENNES — Vergennes police early on Saturday morning reluctantly cited a woman for petit larceny for stealing potted flowers from a White Street resident’s porch, an action taken on their second visit to the scene.

The first call came just before midnight on Friday, when a White Street resident said a woman started walking off his porch with a potted plant, refused his request not to do so, and then went into a neighboring home.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a report that a woman with a self-inflicted wound had locked herself in a room in a North Pleasant Street residence on May 29. Police said Middlebury Regional EMS took the woman to Porter Hospital for treatment/evaluation.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

• Investigated an unspecified theft from the Middlebury College campus on May 26.

• Were informed on May 26 that a bike had been stolen from the Middlebury College campus.

Bristol Police Log: Bristol police respond to crash, man cited for DUI

BRISTOL — On Saturday, May 30, at around 2:30 a.m., Bristol police were called to East Street, west of the Lord’s Prayer Rock, for a motor vehicle crash.

Chief Kevin Gibbs reports that Kyle T. Hamblin, 23, of Waltham lost control of the vehicle he was driving and slammed into several mailboxes, drove back onto the roadway and then drove off East Street (Route 116) again and came to rest. Neither Hamblin, who admitted to police that he was the driver, nor his female passenger was injured.

Vermont State Police Log: House burglarized, drugs taken

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police in the New Haven barracks are investigating the burglary of a residence located on Lime Kiln Road in New Haven.

Items reported taken from the home include prescription medication.

Police report that someone forced their way through the front door sometime between May 26 and May 29.

Vergennes police log: City police occupied with variety of incidents

VERGENNES — Between June 1 and 7, Vergennes police dealt with a variety of cases, including helping a game warden and Vermont State Police, handling a number of animal complaints, and responding to two vandalism incidents.

In those seven days, Vergennes police:

• On June 1 received a tip from another agency that a resident might be involved with illegal drugs.

• On June 1 called the animal control officer to handle a dog reported to be running loose on School Street.

Middlebury police log: Cops investigate Magic Wok restaurant burglary

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on June 4 responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Magic Wok Restaurant on Route 7 South.

Police learned however that it had not been a robbery, but rather a burglary that had occurred sometime the previous night. Police reported an “undetermined amount of cash” had been taken from the cash register.

ADDISON COUNTY — A Vergennes man died during the evening of Tuesday, June 2, after driving a vehicle off Route 7 in Ferrisburgh, according to Vermont State Police.

Authorities identified the deceased as Dana S. Phillips, 55.

VSP Log: Bridport man released after being charged with threatening to knife minors

ADDISON COUNTY — A Bridport young man on Monday pleaded innocent in Chittenden Superior Court, criminal division, to a charge of aggravated domestic assault, after he allegedly threatened to harm two minors with a knife if they did not stop making noise in his family’s home.

Marshall J. Atkins, 20, was released with conditions following his Monday arraignment.

VERGENNES — Vergennes police between June 8 and 14, among other incidents, dealt with egg-tossing vandals, a disorderly bar patron, an overweight truck on Monkton Road, two allegedly drunk drivers, a report of a prowler, several car accidents and a house fire.

Middlebury police log: police search for suspicious 'scruffy' man

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police received a report about a “scruffy-looking” man, about six feet tall, who was wearing a navy T-shirt and jeans, who allegedly tried to get a young child to go with him on Court Street on June 10. Police said a parent intervened, but the man had left when police arrived.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

• Spoke with a Lower Foote Street resident who said on June 8 that her sister was missing. Police said they were able to locate the sister in a medical treatment facility.

Bristol Police Log: Police uphold order by responding to calls, patrolling roads

BRISTOL — During May, Bristol police patrolled several roads outside of the village per town contracts, including Daniel’s Four Corners, Monkton Road, Stoney Hill, Lovers Lane, Cove Road, Hewitt Road and Hardscrabble Road. During those patrols, police issued three tickets for not obeying a stop sign, one for not carrying a license and five for speeding, plus issued warnings for defective equipment and no inspection stickers.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police were informed on June 19 of the theft of two orange extension ladders from two separate Case Street residences sometime within the past two weeks.Anyone with any information is asked to call Officer Kevin Emilio at 802-388-3191.

•   Responded on June 15 to the Inn on the Green for a report that one of the escaped convicts from New York was allegedly staying there. Police determined the convict was not staying at the hotel.

Vergennes Police Log: Northlands student cited for assault

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on June 15 arrested a Northlands Job Corps student for allegedly assaulting two other students, one of whom, police said, was taken to Porter Hospital for an overnight stay due to concussion and nausea.

Police cited Quamar M. Harmon, 18, of Newark, N.J., for simple assault for allegedly punching one victim in the back of the head, and for aggravated assault for kicking a second victim twice in the side of the face. The second victim was hospitalized, police said.

Vermont State Police Log: Erratic driving draws DUI charge

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police stopped a motor vehicle driven by Walter H. Koshell, 24, of Mount Vernon, N.Y., on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh after a complaint was called in for erratic driving.

Police said their investigation showed that Koshel was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Koshel provided a preliminary sample of his breath and his blood alcohol content was measured at 0.105 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.
